Two different types of flat screen TV

How to choose the right TV set

Both LCD and plasma can produce beautiful images, but they have different characteristics. One is not necessary better than the other.

It’s a personal preference as to the type of image you want to see, along with the size and cost factor. Compare the two side by side in the store to see what you like best. LCDs screens have a matte finish with minimal reflection.

LCDs have a better image quality and higher resolution at smaller screen sizes than any other display technology and tends to be brighter than plasmas. It has a very realistic look, natural balance, superior color accuracy, good flesh tones, and sharpness.

Digital TV Formats

The screen size for an LCD can vary from 2 inches to 52 inches, and expect screens to be larger than that in the near future. LCDs weigh about half as much as a CRT television with the same size screen. They are popular in places where there is not much space. They can be desk, cabinet or wall mounted.

EZ Tip: We purchased a 42 inch Digital LCD TV . Soon after, we found it on Amazon.com for $300 less. You may want to check prices there before you make your purchase.

General information about all flat screen TVs:
# Almost all flat panel televisions have a widescreen format.
# Many flat panel TVs include a PC input. If you have PIP (picture in a picture), you can watch TV while searching the web!
# Almost all flat panel televisions can display high-definition (HDTV) . Many tube (CRT) televisions cannot.
# The picture is brilliant and easily viewable in all lighting situations.
# They have a wide viewing area and allows for undistorted viewing from most angles.
# They tend to have better audio systems than the old televisions had.
# Flat screen TVs are some of the most expensive video products on the market. At the present time, LCDs are less expensive than Plasma in screen sizes of 50 inches or less. Plasmas are less expensive than LCDs in screen sizes of 50 inches or more.

Samsung LN46B650 Lowest Price

It should be noted that I have not purchased this TV. I did spend several hours comparing the two versions at Best Buy and this is what I found:
The B650 has a MUCH clearer picture. And by "clearer", I mean more defined with a sharper contrast, brighter whites and darker darks.

I attribute this to the doubling of the contrast ratio. The A650 has a 50,000:1 whereas the B650 has 100,000:1. For those that do not know about contrast, the contrast ratio measures how many stages there are between the darkest dark to the whitest white a crystal can do. The problem is that the manufacturers do NOT use the same standard for what "dark" really is. Additionally, their darkest dark is measured when the tv is OFF - not very helpful since you're not seeing how dark the crystal can actually get. The B650 looked like a HD set while the A650 looked like a regular flatscreen.

I had the salesman put both tvs with the same settings to compare the two realistically. I also looked for the motion and "ghosting" that occurs when action is moving. For this test, I looked closely at a soccer game being displayed on the two tvs. Again the B650 did not show quite as much "trailing" that the A650 did. Although both sets were 120hz, the B650 out shown the A650 hands down. The response time (how long the crystal takes to go from white, to dark, back to white again) for both of these sets is 4ms; but the B650 seemed to have a much more fluid motion - much like if you were watching real life.

I am going to hold out some more to see if the price of these go down, but I am definitely going to purchase the B650 instead of the A650. Honestly, the best way is to go to Best Buy and see for yourself. Don't be afraid to ask the sales people to adjust the color and contrast for you.

Hope this helps someone decide which version you go with.

It should be noted that not all TVs, although the same model are not created equal. If you can, get two TVs and keep the best out of the two.

Samsung LN55B650 - Reviews

Samsung LN55B650 - Reviews

Read Before BUY !!

The Samsung LN55B650 is a brilliant-looking HDTV set that features 55 inches of top-notch image quality. With a 1080P HD resolution and 120Hz refresh rate, any film or show that you watch on this set is guaranteed to look completely amazing. The Full HD-Grade Pixel Resolution really makes individual colors stand out, though I do have to complain a bit about the blacks in this display set being a bit underwhelming. The issues I have with the LN55B650 are few and far between, though. My favorite thing is the Ultra Clear panel, which I’ll get into in a bit.

Like other new Samsung sets, the Samsung LN55B650 utilizes the new “Touch of Color” design present in the x000 series. The MediaLink technology gives you access to streaming information and media from your PC and directly to your television set. This allows you to surf specific web sites and easily keep up to date on any important information that you may find necessary without having to do so on your computer.

The Ultra Clear panel feature is something that adds a striking amount of image quality to the Samsung LN55B650’s display. Within the Samsung LN55B650 is a polarizer that reflects light and uses it to produce higher quality hues of colors within the set itself. The benefits from this are two-fold; not only is the quality of colors improved, but glare is reduced due to light being absorbed by the display itself instead of simply reflecting off the screen. It’s really something that you have to see in person in order to fully appreciate, and I wish that this feature would be incorporated into more sets. The quality is made even better by what Samsung calls “Natural mode”, which uses the increased brightness inherently present in LCD sets to contrast it with plasma display setting sin order to create a contrast level that is naturally pleasing to the eyes.

Anyone looking to set up a home theatre would do well to look into the Samsung LN55B650 as their set of choice. It is competitively priced and offers many features that are sure to please even the most die-hard LCD aficionados. Though newer lines (specifically the 8000 series) offer exotic new features that are completely cutting-edge, anyone wanting nothing more than a high-quality set with great image quality and the assurance of an established manufacturer in the HD television set industry is guaranteed to be happy with this set.

Major specifications of the Samsung B650 Series:
  • 55/46/40/37/32/22/19 Inches

  • 920x1080 (1080p) HD Display

  • Touch of Color" Design

  • MediaLink

  • # Auto Motion Plus 120Hz

  • 15000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio

  • Ultra Clear Panel

  • Wide Color Enhancer

  • 4 HDMI Inputs

  • USB Inputs

  • Component Video Inputs

  • S-Video Input

  • 2 Composite A/V Inputs

LCD HDTV 2009 Guide #1

Shopping for an LCD HDTV?

Know Your Stuff!!

What's LCD HDTV?

Much like other LCD devices you're more used to, such as alarm clocks and computer monitors - LCD televisions also utilize a technology based on polarized light, where two polarized panels are located in front of and in back of a thin layer of liquid crystal gel, that is divided up into individual pixels. Each pixel is activated individually thanks to two axis of wires, which polarizes them accordingly.

"Ghosting" used to be a noticeable problem with older model LCDs. It's a term that describes how certain bright parts of a movie would "hang around" for a few seconds, or even display a trail as it moved across the screen. This is due to brighter pixels that would 'maintain' light for a time period of 20 milliseconds, while undergoing the transition to another color or light intensity for another 15-20 milliseconds of time. Since the inception of LCD televisions, that time was shortened to only 8 milliseconds.

In order to improve the quality of LCD televisions going forward, a viable strategy is to increase the refresh rate (the 'invisible' line that scrolls and refreshes the screen constantly), and to reduce the backlight response of the LCD screen itself.

Interlaced vs. Progressive LCD HDTVs

Another factor in LCD HDTVs are the scan rate: which include an interlaced and a progressive picture. Have you ever seen video tape footage of a PC screen? If so, you may have noticed how the screen seems to "sweep" up and down constantly, almost like a slide show. That is an interlaced picture. Similarly, interlaced HDTVs (and monitors) refresh every other line of the picture, every other time. The process is unseen by the naked eye. However, interlaced screens are known to cause "eye distress," which your mother warned you about when you sat too close to the TV set. Progressive sets, on the other hand, refresh every line every single time, much like one long "sweep" down the screen after another. Progressive pictures are easier on the eyes, display a smooth viewing image with less "jaggies," and consequentially, cost a little more.

What is DLP HDTV?

DLP or "Digital Light Processing" is a rear projection technology for television. DLP HDTVs are typically less expensive and more lightweight that LCD or Plasma TVs, immune from screen burn-in & color decay, and able to represent high speed images without ghosting or blurring effects that other television technologies suffer from. DLP TVs are known to have excellent color and grayscale representation. LED DLP TVs never need a lamp replacement. Note that non-LED DLP's (typically older models, as most today are LED) *will* need lamp replacements after several years of usage, and the cost can be rather high. Overall, an LED DLP HDTV is a worthy investment for its long life, great color quality and slim size. Avoid older DLP HDTVs, as they're known to suffer from a condition known as the "rainbow effect," in which bright white tones projected over black backgrounds appear in a multi-color effect. Newer televisions do not have this issue.

LCD HDTV Aspect Ratio

You may have already seen terms here, such as "16:9 aspect ratio," and had no clue what it meant. Aspect ratio simply means "units high x units wide." So, a 16:9 HDTV is 16 units wide x 9 units high ("units" meaning the measurement of an original video production, a broadcasting term). Wide sets allow you to see widescreen movies in their "natural mode," without the letterbox crop bars. They also allow you to watch the older, non-narrow shows as well, albeit with the black crop bars on the left and right. Overall, the newer, wider 16:9 is the winner over the older 4:3 "standard" television screens for their breadth of view, and ability to watch older formats, as well!

What Does "720" or "1080" HDTV Mean?

HDTVs are always defined by the resolution, or the number of vertical pixels that they have. For instance, a 720 HDTV has 720 pixels per line going up and down (rather, vertically) the screen itself, and across 1,280 lines going horizontally to the other end of the screen. In contrast, a 1080 HDTV has 1080 pixels per line going vertically, with 1,920 lines going across, horizontally. In these cases, the 1080 HDTV set is the better of the two - since more pixels means more detail. Note that the resolution and the actual size of the screen in inches are not directly related: therefore, a 22" 1080p HDTV and a 22" 720p HDTV can both exist (don't assume that smaller screens are always 720p!)

1080p vs. 1080i HDTV...Which One Wins?

Naturally, you'll want to go with the best option for the most technologically long-lasting, satisfying, high quality LCD television set; especially in a consumer market where things keep changing so rapidly.

The question of 1080p and 1080i comes up in this case. What does it mean? In short, these are two popular HDTV video modes found in the newer model TV sets. 1080"p" represents "Progressive Scan." This means that the pictures on a 1080p television screen are drawn with a moving line, similarly to the way computer monitors work.

Conclusively: the 1080p HDTV is the superior product, although it is the more expensive choice. If you're going for a somewhat larger screen, you'll appreciate the 1080p's progressive nature. It's always best practice to go with the "newer" format; which in this case, is the 1080p.

There is one important thing to mention here: if you're going for larger screens, there's no doubt that you should only consider a 1080p...however, if your screen is 50" or less, there will be no visible difference with the additional pixels that come with the 1080p. So, stick with a 720p for a screen that's 50" or less -- you'll save a lot of money without sacrificing quality.

Let's review the pros and cons of the 1080p, vs. that of the older 1980i format. Despite the fact that 1080i has its own set of proficiencies, the 1080p is the superior technology:

1080p HDTV Pros (vs. 1080i)
  • Simpy put, it's newer than 1080i. It will, in fact, eventually become the "standard."

  • Has twice the resolution of a 1080i signal, technically capable of displaying every single pixel of an HD broadcast.

  • Progressive TV sets (flat LCDs, Plasmas) are already progressive in nature, can use progressive scan as a default (no need to convert from another type).

  • Conveys all "lines" in a single sweep, resulting in a smoother, crisper image

1080p HDTV Cons (vs. 1080i)
  • Has half the frame rate of 1080i

  • More expensive than 1080i sets

  • The difference in resolution between 1080p and 1080i may not be seen by the naked eye, except on larger TV sets

Sharp Aquos Review

Model: Sharp LC-52E77U
Description:  1920 X 1080 HD LCD TV
Reviewer: Robert Wiley
Date: Fall 2009
Test and Optimum Viewing Distance: 15 feet

Calibration Notes: The LC-52E77U contains fairly easy to use calibration tools including white balance settings controls without having to access the service menu. The E77U contains a BLUE push that we found difficult to reduce
Below are are final picture settings to bring the user close to D6500 without accessing the service menu:

Picture Settings
Picture Mode User
Color Temp Low
Brightness -12
Contrast +36
Color +1
Tint +1
Sharpness -1
Backlight +6
OPC Off

480i DVD and Broadcast Viewing: As difficult and unpredictable as the E77U series is with calibration, the same applies to the picture experience. At times the LC-52E77U had ultra saturated looking blacks and great contrast. At others the picture appeared washed out during dark scenes. There is a lot of processing going on with this TV at many different levels. The internal picture doctor is hard at work. Therefore we viewed a lot of source material on it to try to get a clear understanding of the strengths and weaknesses. There are motion artifacts of varieties – swimmy effects with side to side jerky motion. At times there is flicker and background noise. In other scenes the presentation looked fantastic, clear, vivid and colorful. The 3D-Y/C feature is available for analog signals and is intended to minimize dot crawl and cross color noise.

LCD Freeview

2009 Looks set to become the year of Freeview

clipped from www.svimag.com
THE FREEVIEW OPPORTUNITY

The small-screen Freeview market is wide open to independent retailers and the sector offers substantial user-benefits and USPs by keeping the screen and Freeview decoder in one compact flat-panel TV package. There are no add-on boxes, no trailing wires, much simplified use, a single remote control and a lower overall power consumption. In addition, desk-stands and wall-mounts are usually included as standard, and most models have a built-in antenna as well as an external aerial connection.

Analogue switch-off / digital switch-over is great news for retailers and it is not just the price-compressed big-screen TV market that will benefit. Small-screen TVs, digital video-recorders and PC-TV hardware components are all set to undergo a digital-makeover as the plug is pulled on analogue TV. Add to this the high-profile media promoting switchover nationwide, and the TV market looks very healthy indeed for the next four years.

Google, Sony and Tivo Develop Smart Televisions

Amplify’d from techland.time.com

By Graeme McMillan on February 18, 2011

Google, Sony, Tivo Form Crusading Supergroup For Smart Televisions

It's like the Justice League of Technology: Google, Sony, TiVo, Mitsubishi, Best Buy and two lesser-known companies (NagraVision and SageTV - Think of them as the Martian Manhunter and Aquaman of the team) have joined together to support the Federal Communication Commission's AllVid proposal, calling themselves the AllVid Tech Company Alliance.

AllVid is a proposed device that would act as a "gateway" adapter allowing all types of pay TV content - whether it's cable or satellite TV, internet TV or IPTV - to be viewable on the same device, without new technology forcing consumers to have to upgrade their equipment. Initially proposed almost a year ago, the subject was greeted with less than enthusiasm from cable companies and content creators, with the Motion Picture Association of America criticizing it as potential promoter of pirated material.

Will the FCC rise to the occasion? Will content creation companies cry foul, and point out this is another front in the ongoing war over platform consolidation? And most importantly, will the AllVid Tech Company Alliance really turn out to be a Justice League, or a Legion of Doom for consumers?

New Sony Bravia Televisions Available With 500 Gig Hard Drives

Sony Bravia Televisions Set To Come With 500 Gig Hard Drives

the new lineup of Sony Bravia televisions packing a 500 gig hard drive.

sony bravia

It’s not just the storage, either–it’s the sheer utility that makes this set of Sony Bravias worth looking at. You’ll not only have the internal 500 gig drive, but you’ll also be able to transfer data both to and from external hard drives, extending your storage capacity to theoretical infinity…or the limits of your wallet, at any rate. That 500 gig, meanwhile, is set to give you fully 65 hours of high-definition recording.

It’s a pretty solid idea, mounting internal DVR technology to a television, and chances are we’ll likely see more televisions capable of storing their own programming the farther we get down the trail. Though I don’t look for too many early adopters at those prices, especially given what DVRs and external hard drives are currently selling for.

There's no news on pricing yet, but the DT30 and VT30 are out in May/June, find out more from Panasonic.

Sony NSX-40GT1 (Google TV) Review

Advantages over other products is its integration tar Television with google TV, enabling us to easily access the Chrome browser that supports Flash and video HTML5; included RF remote QWERTY; built-in Wi-Fi, the user interface layer for the content of TV cable / satellite box ; can control the TV, AV receiver, and cable / satellite box with an external IR emitter; Android Market with one face to face. Including better color performance, sleek design, and there are power-saving features.

The downside there is the black light level is quite disturbing and several times appeared shadow flicker. Less comfortable touchpad, and the size of a remote that is not comfortable in the hand. Rare analog connectivity, limited application at launch and a bug in the software

This TV is one of the easiest TV to be connected to the internet series is also known to make our life always follow the growth of Google TV and is also a very amazing picture quality

The difference this series than the two other Google products Tv, namely Logitech Reveu and also of the same type, namely SONY bluray NSZ-GT1 is the integration. By simply connecting to the internet, google TV with all the facilities already exist in front of you. Remotenya Although sometimes difficult, but still better than the Logitech.

Viewed from the front of internet TV is reminiscent of a giant iPhone. With a clean appearance, where there is only the Sony logo and an array of LED indicators.

Sony's unique metal stand may look precarious but supported our thin, 46-inch review sample well enough. The panel's 2.3-inch depth out-chunks LED-based sets like the 1.2-inch Samsung UNC6500, but we're guessing that extra inch better accommodates the Google TV hardware packed inside. Overall, we don't like the NSX-GT1 series' look as much as that of Sony's high-end "Monolithic"-styled TVs, like the KDL-NX800 series, but it's still plenty slick for both standard and atypical TV rooms, like the kitchen or bedroom.

Rave Review of Panasonic's new DMR-EX78 DVD

You cannot go wrong with this new Panasonic's DMR-EX78 DVD according to review on whathifi.com.

EXCLUSIVE REVIEW: Panasonic's new DMR-EX78 DVD and 250GB hard-disk recorder tested

Pana 78

Verdict

You can get slightly cheaper DVD recorders, and you can get some with even larger hard disks, but this Panasonic offers a near-perfect blend of flexibility and value

What with all the fuss surrounding hard-disk PVRs and Blu-ray disc players, a new DVD recorder might not seem the most exciting newcomer of 2008 - but in many ways, Panasonic's DMR-EX78 is actually one of the best buys we've come across so far this year.

1080p video upscaling

Once installed – the work of moments – the DMR-EX78's image quality quickly astounds. It's equipped with an HDMI video output, as you'd hope, coupled to 1080p video upscaling if needed, and that, plus its excellent TV tuner, means broadcast pictures are simply terrific.

The Panasonic gives you 250GB of inbuilt storage space, enough to offer 55 hours of recording in best-quality XP mode, 110 hours in SP mode, 221 hours in LP mode and 441 hours in EP mode.

Are You Making the Switch to HD TV?

HD TV is about a 3 times improvement on DVD picture quality!

Is it worth switching to HDTV?

By Colin Clements
Tv shopping

TO HD or not to HD.
That is the question that’s been facing Australian consumers since the Seven Network stole a march on its competitors by launching Australia’s first high-definition (HD) multi-channel in October last year.
But while that may be the case, the majority of Australians won’t experience it, with recent figures suggesting just over 30 per cent of Australian homes have a HDTV set.

What you're missing

HD works by using more pixels to deliver a higher quality picture than standard-definition (SD) television. It means sharper images, finer details and more colours.
But to enjoy the full visual benefits of HD (around three times better picture quality than DVD), you’ll need an LCD or plasma television with a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

Panasonic's Quality No Frills DMR-EX768 Recorder

Great review of Panasonic's DMR-EX768 DVD/HDD Recorder, although lacking the frills of their top end offering this is an excellent easy to use machine. Please click through to read the ful review.

Panasonic DMR-EX768 DVD/HDD Recorder

Click for full size
The DMR-EX768 is another model from Panasonic's latest line-up of digital recorders, which in our opinion is the company's strongest ever. We recently tested the DMR-EX78 and were hit for six by its combination of convenient features, magnificent picture quality and ease of use, and the DMR-EX768 seemingly offers more of the same but at a lower price.
Of greatest interest is the deck's extensive digital TV functionality. The built-in digital tuner offers the full Freeview channel line-up, which can be recorded directly onto the hard-disk or DVD. You can browse the TV schedules up to seven days in advance using the Guide Plus EPG, which lets you set timer recordings at the touch of a button. But the best thing about Panasonic's latest recorders is that they're all Freeview Playback compatible and therefore support series recording and split recording.

Review of Panasonic's TH42PX80 42 Inch Plasma

Good review of Panasonics excellent value Plasma, well worth a look at if you cannot afford their full HD models.

clipped from www.hdtvorg.co.uk

Panasonic TH42PX80 Review

With the PX80 Panasonic have managed to retain a
conservatism that most consumers will be happy with while introducing
some simple but effective stylistic changes. A subtle upward curve at
the base of the screen is a nice touch along with a wedge shaped
pedestal which really does make this panel stand out from the crowd.
The PX80 features 3 HDMI inputs (one more than the PX70) a PC/vga input along with 2 Scarts and the usual Composite, Component and S-Video inputs. Unlike the PX70 it also features
100Hz processing. Contrast ratio is up from a quoted 10,000:1 to 15:000:1 resolution.
There is also an SD card slot.
With the TH42PX80 Panasonic have maintained and enhanced their reputation for producing plasmas with excellent black levels. Improving on an
already excellent black level performance over its predecessor the PX70, the PX80 while not quite reaching the standards set by Pioneer's Kuro range has done enough to cause some worried backward glances.

Review: Panasonic's Compact 37 Inch TH-37PX80

Quoting the reviewer "possibly the best value plasma package at the time of writing"

clipped from www.hdtvorg.co.uk

Panasonic TH37PX80 Review

First impressions indicate a more refined
appearance for Panasonic's TH-37PX80. The build quality of this unit
in particular, is markedly improved over its predecessor, the TH-37PX70.
Connectivity on the PX80 has been improved with an extra HDMI input,
taking the total to 3. There is also a PC/vga input along with 2 Scarts and the usual Composite, Component and S-Video inputs.
Unusual for an entry level panel, there is also an SD card slot which
can, amongst other things, display your JPEG photos.
As expected motion handling is one of the TH37PX80s strengths, with no evidence of smearing at anytime, even with the quickest movie action sequences or sporting action. Although we don't feel that improvements in this area from the PX70 are huge, general reduction of general 'noise' contributes to a more refined performance in this respect.

Review: LG's 50PC55 50 Inch Plasma

Looking for an alternative to Panasonic or Sony's offerings? then LG may be the one to go for!

clipped from www.hdtvorg.co.uk

LG 50PC55 Review

LG have realised that style
sells and have employed an Italian design studio to improve on
the rather clunky look of LG's of the past.
With its piano black minimalist look complemented by a stand in the same style, the
50PC55 looks like it could actually claw back sales that were lost as a result of previous models rather 'clunky' style. The finishing slim silver strip which
separates the screen frame from the full length horizontal speaker at the units base completes a rather chic piece of kit that won't look out of place even in the most fashion
conscious of households.
Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the LG 50PC55's performance considering its budget status is its black level ability. It can't match the benchmark 'Kuro' screens from Pioneer, but nevertheless puts in a wholly convincing performance that is the equal of most LCD TV's. Darker scenes look genuinely black, and only reveal a certain amount of greyness on closer inspection.
